When it comes to healthy eating and weight loss, many people believe they must give up their traditional foods and switch to foreign diets filled with salads, smoothies, or complicated meal plans. But here’s the truth I wish more people knew:
Our cultural foods — when prepared intentionally — are incredibly nourishing and can absolutely support your weight loss and wellness goals.
One powerful example? The classic Zambian meal: Nshima, Chicken Stew, and Leafy Greens. Let’s break it down.

🍲 The Recipe: Balanced, Simple, and Full of Flavor
Ingredients

- 1 teaspoon curry powder

- A small amount of cooking oil
Method
- In a non-stick pan, lightly fry the skinless drumsticks in a small amount of oil until golden brown.
- Add onions and garlic, and sauté until lightly browned.
- Stir in the grated tomato, curry powder, and coriander, and allow the mixture to simmer until well combined and the chicken is fully cooked.

💡 Why This Traditional Meal Supports Weight Loss
When portioned and prepared correctly, this meal hits every note of good nutrition:
✅ Lean protein: Skinless chicken supports muscle maintenance and helps with satiety.
✅ Complex carbohydrates: Nshima provides sustained energy — especially when eaten in moderation.
✅ Fiber and micronutrients: Local vegetables are rich in iron, calcium, vitamin A, and antioxidants.
✅ Low in fat: Minimal oil and no cream-based sauces keep calories in check.
✅ Anti-inflammatory benefits: Garlic, coriander, and tomatoes add flavor and functional nutrients.
